New insights of the volcanic gas signature of the Central American Volcanic Arc

Volcanic gas emissions carry crucial information on pre- and syn-eruptive processes, and on behaviour of active volcanic systems. Gas variations arise from replenishment of magma storage zones with mafic magma, from magma ascent and evolution, and from interaction with hydrothermal systems and volcanic lakes. As such, volcanic gases represent “open windows” into genesis and release of volatiles from the Earth’s interior. Volcanic emission measurements allow understanding subsurface magmatic and hydrothermal processes, and contribute to eruption forecasting. Carbon dioxide and sulfur gas represent the most abundant and studied gas species. In particular, CO2, due his fast exsolution during m…

Reframing Central American Migration From Narrative Journalism

2018

Over the past decade, some journalists and media have addressed Central American migration to the United States from an investigative and narrative reporting perspective, providing a more reliable and accurate portrait of the main characters and their underlying reasons for making the move. This article examines how an ethnographic and analytical approach in combination with narrative techniques can improve the coverage of complex issues such as migration, providing more detailed and complete information than conventional media presents. The qualitative analysis focuses on five projects, including the crossmedia On the Road—with a long-form reportage, a book of photographs, and a documentar…

¿Habrá moros en la costa? La producción cultural centroamericana leída desde España / Would there be Moors on the Coast? Central American Cultural Pr…

2017

Volatile contents of mafic-to-intermediate magmas at San Cristóbal volcano in Nicaragua

2017

San Cristóbal volcano in northwest Nicaragua is one of the most active basaltic–andesitic stratovolcanoes of the Central American Volcanic Arc (CAVA). Here we provide novel constraints on the volcano's magmatic plumbing system, by presenting the first direct measurements of major volatile contents in mafic-to-intermediate glass inclusions from Holocene and historic-present volcanic activity. Olivine-hosted (forsterite [Fo] < 80; Fo< 80) glass inclusions from Holocene tephra layers contain moderate amounts of H2O (0.1–3.3 wt%) and S and Cl up to 2500 μg/g, and define the mafic (basaltic) endmember component. Historic-present scoriae and tephra layers exhibit more-evolved olivines (Fo69…

Networks to State Capture: Business Elite Networks and Mechanisms of Corporate State Capture in Central American Countries

2017

This paper aims to find out what configuration of business elite networks enables corporate state capture. To achieve this goal, it first uncovers and analyses business elite networks through interlocking directorates in three Central American countries using network analysis, and second, analyses the relationship between business elite networks and the mechanisms that enable corporations to capture states: namely revolving doors and the funding of political parties in the 2014 elections. Findings indicate that when some of the business elites configure a large and cohesive networked business community, while the rest is fragmented, corporate state capture is more likely to occur, as in the…
